  General Notes:

HARRIET BROWN, was born 9 May 1847, in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. The biography of her husband, John Michael Shong, in the "Commemorative Biographical Record of the Upper Lake Region", says Harriet was a native of "Lowell", England, but this town cannot be located. There is, however, a Low Ellers and a Low Ellington both, curiously enough in Yorkshire, where the Browns were living. Harriet married her husband, John Michael Shong, in Fall Creek, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, on 28 April 1866. (He was born 15 August 1830 in Laning, France; and died 1 November 1906 in Superior, Wisconsin.) Her family was not found in the 1870 Eau Claire County Census, but many other families of that surname were living in the county at that time. However, Harriet and her family were apparently living in the county at that time as the biography of their eldest son, Edwin Riley Shong, indicates that he was born at Fall Creek, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, on 25 February 1869; and that he attended the public school of Fall Creek and Augusta, Wisconsin; and in 1887 came with his parents to Superior, Wisconsin. It is interesting to note that the Shongs included in the Eau Claire County Census of 1870, who were heads of families, had all been born in France. Harriet and her husband were the parents of four sons and one daughter (Edwin Riley, Frank, Charles, Albert C., and Lottie). Harriet was survived by her husband. She died 3 October 1903 in Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin. He later died 1 November 1906, in Superior, Wisconsin. The Shong and Brown families in Minnesota apparently kept in touch because Harriet's son, Charles Shong of Superior, Wisconsin, attended the funeral of his uncle, Charles A.2 Brown in 1929.

Noted events in her life were:

• UK Census, 1851, Leeds South, West Yorkshire, England. 28540

• Emigration: SS Benjamin Adams, 9 Sep 1856, Liverpool, England to New York, USA. 28542

• USA Census, 1860, Bridge Creek, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA. 28530

• USA Census, 1870, Lincoln, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA. 28565

• USA Census, 1880, Lincoln, Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA. 28566

• USA Census, 1900, Superior, Douglas, Wisconsin, USA. 28568

• Registered Burial, 3 Oct 1903, Greenwood Cemetery, Superior, Douglas, Wisconsin, USA. 28567
