Bill Zimmer Dies; Former Chester Cop
CHESTER '97 William R. Zimmer, 61, one of this city's last mounted policemen, died yesterday in the U.S. Naval Hospital, Philadelphia, following a long illness. He lived at 1920 W. 2nd St.
He entered police service on Nov. 12, 1917, as a patrolman. After his transfer to the mounted police detail, he was assigned to duty in the mid-city business district. He retired in 1943.
A veteran of World War I and a native of Chester, Mr. Zimmer was of the Scott Lodge, F. & A. M., Stevenson Post No. 190, American Legion, Penn Lodge of the Fraternal Order of Police and the Felton Fire Co.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret L.; a son, William R. of Brookhaven, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services conducted by Rev. Roy S. Weed of Brookhaven Baptist Church will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Melvin I. Minshall funeral home, 11th and Kerlin sts., where viewing will be tomorrow evening. Burial will be in Soldier's Circle, Chester Rural Cemetery.
