William and his brothers Frederick & Charles all joind the British Army in 1915 but were discharged after being convicted of "assault occasioning actual bodily harm". They were convicted on 19 October 1915 and sentenced to 1`8 months imprisonment. The sentence was reduced on appeal to 12 months.

It appears that the brothers joined the British Army in order to avoid a prison sentence - to no avail as it turned out.
