CRASH AT 40 M.P.H. The Bath Road Fatality. The Coroner, Mr E. T. Louch, held an inquiry at Frome on Saturday, into the death of Hubert Philip Heffer (31), lice:sce of the Viaduct Hotel, who died from injuries sustained in a motoring accident on the road between Wolverton and Bath on Thursday.

Evidence of identification was given by deceased's brother, Christopher Evan Heffer, of Catford. Miss Alice Dando. wife of Thomas Dando, licensee of the Woolpack Inn, Beckington, said on Thursday last deceased came into the yard of the inn, and witness accompanied him in his car as far as Rode; they went to a private house, where deceased looked at a piano with a view to purchase. He brought her back to the inn, and left at six o'clock. Whilst at the inn he had no refreshment whatever, and was all right in health when he left.

Stephen Sheppard, baker, of Norton St. Philip, said that he was cycling on the Bath Road between Beckingham and Wolverton, and a car passed him just below the Turnpike Cottage at Shawford at about 40 miles an hour. There was a clear road at the time--a main road of good width. The car got on to the grass at the ton side of Laverton Lane and ran on the grass for about 15 yards, and then crashed into a telegraph pole. Witness was about 30 yards, behind.

As a result of the impact the driver was hurled into the air and his head crashed against the pole. The car was badly damaged. Almost at the same time another car arrived on the scene, and the occupants did what they could. Under Control. Mrs Scott.

a widow, said she was standing in the doorway of the Turnpike Cottage and saw two cars coming from the direction of Beckington. She noticed that they were coming rather quickly, and were about five or six yards apart. She did not see the accident, but when she went out again the red car was in the ditch about 70 yards from the cottage. When the car passed her it appeared to be under perfect control. P.C.

Button. stationed at Beckington, said that on the Wolverton side of the turnpike he saw the remains of a wrecked car. Both left wheels were in the ditch, and deceased was lying on the grass unconscious. The front of the car was smashed to bits. Deceased wa3 conveyed in a passing lorry to Frome Hospital, where, he died at 10.45.

Dr. Williams said deceased sustained a fractured base of the skull, and did not regain consciousness. Police-Sergeant Ashford, of Frome, said Mr. Albert Lee, a motor expert, of Bath; pointed out to witness that the main driving rod of the damaged car was snapped. If the rod was broken before the accident deceased would have had no control over the car.

The Coroner said the case was a very sad one, and it was obvious that deceased was perfectly sober at the time. The cause of the accident was the breaking of the steering rod. A verdict of Accidental death" was returned.
