Clark Rites to be Held Monday
Andy Clark, 60, office manager of the Velvet Ice Cream co., chairman of the Atchison county selective service board, and former county clerk, died at 4 a.m. yesterday at the Atchison hospital of a heart attack. He was stricken at 1.30 a.m. yesterday at his home with a coughing spell. After treatment by a physician he was taken to the hospital in an ambulance and placed in an oxygen tent. According to Mrs. Clark, her husband had not felt well for several days. but he was at work Friday and also washed his car. Funeral services will be held at 9.30 a.m. tomorrow at Sacred Heart chuyrch. Internment will be at Mt. Calvary cemetery. Flemington-Jackson-Seever will conduct military rites at the grave. Pallbearers will be B.O. Doyle, Joseph Haeglin, George Rose, Clay Lott. Eugene Lee and Walter Gearhart. The rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock this evening at the Harouff-Buis service chapel. ON DRAFT BOARD A deeply religious man, Andy Clark had not missed attending Sunday mass since 1912. He had served as a member of the Atchison county selective servicve board, a job with no pay attached, from the time the board was instituted in 1940 until his death. He had the distinction of not missing a single meeting of the board. On Sept. 10, 1952, Mr. Clark was elected chairman of the board. Previously he had served as secretary from September, 1948, until becoming chariman. Since Selective Service Act of 1948 the local board had met a total of 142 times. There is no record of the number of meetings held duriong World War 11. In any job he undertook, Mr. Clark was a dedicated man, serving with conscience and devotion to duty. He was elected county clerk in 1932 and served four terms, eight years in the office before resigning. He was especially capable and was known for his ability and dilkigence in instructing others in proper procedure. It was in 1940 that Mr. Clark became office manager of the Velvet Ice Cream Co. POPULAR IN AREA Mr. Clark was one of the best known and best liked business man in Northeast Kansas. Everyone who knew him feels his death a personal loss. As one friend said, "He was always willing to help others". Many people took personal problems to Mr. Clark for counsel. He assisted numerous veterans in filing papers for benefits. Andrew Matthia Clark was born Oct. 27 1895 in Shannon, a son of Thomas L. and Julia Margaret Coglan Clark. He was reared on route 2, north of Atchison. He attended grade school at St. Louis college and St Benedict's college. Andy Clark and his brother, Ray. began working at the Don Miller Ford agency as automible mechanics as very young men. When Miller sold ther business here they and their brother, Joe Clark, started their nown business, the Clark Brothers garage, which later became known as the WK (or well known) garage. The late Carl Brown, who was editor of The Globe, gave the garage its nickname. During World War 1 Andy Clark served in the army at Camp Funston and Aberdeen, Md. Mr. Clark was a communicant of Sacred Heart church and a former member of the church board. He was alwats active in Democratic polotics and was treasurer of the Atchison County Democratic Central commitee at the time of his death. He was a member of the American Legion. In 1922 Mr. Clark married Miss Ula Browning of Atchison. She died in January 1932. June 25, 1935, he married Miss Georgia Collins at St. Benedict's church. Surviving are his wife of the home, 1104 Kansas avenue; a son, Bob Clark, of the home; three sisters, Mrs. Hugh Cavanaugh, Atchison, Mrs. Eugene Morin, St. Joe, and Mrs. Albert Handke, Atchison, and two brothers, Ray Clark, route 3 and Joe Clark, route 2.
