HUGH MALTBY BROWN (BAPTIZED 8 MAY 1796 - DIED 1855). The verification of the linkage and the names of the parents of our emigrant ancestor, John Rightson Brown; i.e., Hugh Maltby Brown and his wife MARYA RIGHTSON, and the names and number of their children were first found in the biography of Edwin M. Brown (a our brother of John Rightson1 Brown) published in the "Historical & Biographical Album, of Chippewa Valley, Wisconsin (1891-1892)", as follows:

"Edwin M. Brown, farmer, was born in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, on 18 October 1830, and is the youngest son of the family of six children of HUGH M. and MARY (RIGHTSON) BROWN, the father having died in 1855, at the age of 65 years; and the mother in 1848. The names of their children: John R., William, Catherine (Mrs. D. Lawler), Thomas, Emma (Mrs. C. Jackson), and Edwin M. (reared in England...."

Hugh Maltby Brown and MARY RIGHTSON (spelled "Wrightson" in English records) were married on 1 June 1818, in the Parish Church of St. Peter, Leeds, Yorkshire, England.
Mary Ann Wrightson, the daughter of John Wrightson, was baptized 18 January 1795 in Whixley (town/parish), Yorkshire England. Our Hugh Maltby Brown and his wife MaryA (Wrightson/Rightson) named their eldest son, "John Rightson1" Brown (our emigrant ancestor), after her father, "JohnB Wrightson". This John Wrightson, a yeoman, was married 1 January 1792, in the Parish Church of Whixley (Church of England), Yorkshire, England, to Ann Squire. At that time, Ann Squire was of Whixley Parish and John Wrightson was of Alne Parish. Following their marriage they lived in or near Youlton, in the Parish of Alne, where their daughter, Mary Ann Wrightson, was born on 9 October 1793. She was first baptized in the Parish Church of Alne on 13 October 1793. At that time her baptism record included the additional information that she was the daughter of John Wrightson of Youlton, a gentleman, who was the son of Robert Wrightson of Youlton, by Mary (Hall) his wife. Her baptism record also included the information that her mother, Ann (Squire), was the daughter of Thomas Squire of the Parish of Whixley, by AnnA (Kettlewell) his wife. Apparently John Wrightson and his family then moved to Whixley Parish where his wife had lived before their marriage, as their daughter, Mary, was again baptized there on 18 January 1795. At that time her father, John Wrightson was said to be a "labourer", living in Whixley. Mary Ann Wrightson's mother's lineage can be traced back several generations as follows: (1) Ann Squire (2) her parents, Thomas Squire and Ann Kettlewell; (3) her grandparents, Thomas Squire and Isabell Dawson; (4) her great-grand- parents, James Squire (wife unknown); and (5) her great-great-grand- parents, Thomas Squire (wife unknown).
Following their marriage, Hugh Maltby Brown and his wife Mary Rightson/Wrightson lived in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. The LEEDS DIRECTORY OF 1826 contains the following entry for our Hugh Maltby Brown and other entries that may have been for his father, Peter Brown, and/or his brothers:

BROWN, HUGH MALTBY - Plumber and Glazier, 37 Mill Street
BROWN, CHAS. - Plumber and Glazier, 1 Brighton bow, Brighton Street
BROWN, CHARLES - Shoemaker, 22 Hatfield Street
BROWN, PETER - Joiner, 35 Clay Street

In the 1851 Census of Leeds, Yorkshire, England, our Hugh Maltby Brown was found living at No. 131 (or 231), 14 New Row (Street) in the Township of Leeds, Borough of Leeds, and Town of Leeds. It was through the information included in this census, that we first learned that his full name was HUGH "MALTBY" BROWN and that he was born in Castleford, Yorkshire, England. The census also included the information that he was then 56 years old (thus placing his date of birth about 1795). With this new information in mind, we searched the records of the Parish Church of Castleford for his baptism and found the following:

Baptized: 8 May 1796 - HUGH MALTBY BROWN, son of PETER BROWN of Kippax.

The records of the Parish Church of Castleford also contained the baptism of his two older brothers as follows: Baptized: 1 Dec 1793 - WILLIAM & CHARLES BROWN, sons of PETER BROWN.

Thus we established the father of Hugh Maltby Brown as being Peter Brown of Kippax. No mention was made in the baptism record of his mother's name. However, the marriage record of his father Peter Brown, includes the information that Peter Brown was married on 17 April 1787, to Hannah Maltby, at Saint Peter (Church of England), in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Mary Maltby, is the daughter of Hugh Maltby and Hannah Farrer/Farrar, who were married on 17 February 1757, also in the Parish Church of Saint Peter, in Leeds, Yorkshire, England. Note that our Hugh Maltby Brown was named after his maternal grandfather, Hugh Maltby.
The 1851 Census of England also included the information that at that time our Hugh MaltbyA Brown was a "widower". (His wife, Mary (Wrightson) Brown, had died in 1848, according to their son Edwin's biography.). In the 1851 Census, Hugh also gave "plumber and glazier" as his occupation.
He was the "head" of his household; and other members included in his household were as follows: Edwin (his son age 20 and a cloth dresser), Emma (his daughter age 18 and a laundress), Dennis Lawler (his son-in-law age 27 and a laundress), Catherine (Brown) Lawler (his daughter age 23 and a dress maker), and Mary Lawler (his granddaughter age 1). His son Edwin Brown later married Marria Sirrs who lived nearby with her parents William and Ann Sirrs. In the census, Marria Sirrs gave her occupation as a "factory worker (silk)".
