Will proved York 29 April 1799, In it he left to his only surviving son Thomas then aged 2 years, a scribbling and carding mill at Farnley and three houses plus three closes of land at The Garth and Middle Close, Farnley, this property held in trust for him by his (Thomas) brother John Bateson, Joseph Walker Jnr and Jonas Stead, Malster. The executors were also guardians of his children.

This is the last will and testament of me Thomas Bateson of Farnley in the Parish of Leeds in the County of York Clothier made this eighteenth day of April in the Year of Our Lord one Thousand Seven Hundred and Ninety Seven.
1. First I will and direct that all my just debts, funeral expenses, the expenses of proving and registering this my will and and the several legacies hereinafter by me given and bequeathed be first only paid and discharged by my Executors hereinafter named by and out of my Personal Estate.
2. And I give and devise all those three closes of land situate at Farnley aforesaid called or commonly known by the several names of The Garth, Middle Close and Farr Close with the appurtenances thereunto belonging now in my own occupation. Also all that erection or building now made use of as a Scribbling and Carding Mill with the appurtenances situate standing and being in the said close of land called The Garth and also all those two messuages, dwellinghouses or tenements situate at Farnley aforesaid now divided into Workshops (except two rooms thereof which are occupied by Joshua Hargreaves as a dwellinghouse) and now in the possessions tenures or occupations of William Longbottom and Joseph Sykes their assigns or undertenants Unto my son Thomas Bateson and his heirs and assigns for ever.
3. And I give and devise unto my dear Wife Mary Bateson and her assigns for and during the term of her natural life all that messuage dwellinghouse or tenement with the barn and other the appurtenances thereunto belonging situate at Farnley aforesaid and now in my own occupation . And also those two messuages dwellinghouses or tenements with the garden stead thereunto adjoining situate lying and being at Farnley aforesaid and now in the possession of myself and of William Longbottom and James Bateson.
4. And from and after the decease of my said Wife I give bequeath and devise the same unto my said Son Thomas Bateson his heirs and assigns forever.
5. Charged and chargeable nevertheless with the payment of the sum of Two Hundred Pounds unto my Daughters Isabel Bateson, Ann Bateson, Mary Bateson and Hannah Bateson equally to be divided amongst them share and share alike to whom I do hereby give and bequeath the same and to be paid to them as and when they severally attain their several ages of twenty years together with lawful interest for the said sum of two hundred pounds until the same be paid.
6. And I give and bequeath unto my said Daughters Isabel Bateson, Ann Bateson, Mary Bateson and Hannah Bateson the sum of three hundred pounds each to be paid them as and when they shall severally attain their respective ages of twenty years. The interest thereof in the meantime to be applied for and to their respective maintenance and education. But in case of any of my said Daughters shall happen to die before attaining the said age of twenty years then and in that case I will and direct that the part or share parts or shares of her or them so dying shall go and be paid unto and equally amongst the survivors or survivor of such Daughters if more than one share and share alike but if only one the to such one and only surviving Daughter her Executors or Administrators. to whom in that case I do hereby give and bequeath the same
7. And I give and bequeath unto my said wife Mary all the rest residue and remainder of my Personal Estate and Effects of what kind or nature whatsoever and wheresoever situate
8. Charged and chargeable nevertheless with the sum of two shillings weekly to my Father James Bateson and his assigns for and during the term of his natural life to whom I hereby give and bequeath the same
9. And it is my will and mind that the devise and bequest made to my said Wife shall be in full of her Dower or Thirds which she may have or claim out of my Real Estate or any part thereof .
10. And I do hereby make nominate constitute and appoint John Bateson of Low Close in the Township of Farnley aforesaid Clothier, Joseph Walker the Younger of Wortley in the Parish of Leeds aforesaid Clothier and Jonas Stead of Farnley aforesaid Maltster Joint Executors of this my Will and Guardians of my said Children during their respective minorities .
