Obituary:

WILLIAMSBURG - Melville Joseph Aston Jr.,75,passed away Wednesday, Feb.14,2007,at his home due to complications from his Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder.A native of Philadelphia,Pa.,he had been a resident of Williamsburg for the past 18 years. At the age of 12,he obtained the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.Achieving this level of accomplishment at this early age was not satisfying enough for him,so,after running away from home,he joined the U.S.Army Air Corps.After discovering his true age, he was dismissed from duty.Not deterred,he re-enlisted into active duty at ages 15 and 17.His career with the U.S.Air Force lasted 22 years and he retired from military service in 1970 as a CMSGT.After his military career,he worked for the United States Department of Agriculture for 17 years,retiring as a Branch Chief in 1987. He received his Bachelor's Degree from the University of Maryland and received his Master's Degree of Science from Central Michigan University.

Surviving members of his family include his wife of 50 years,Mary Claire Aston;daughters,Melissa Conway and husband,Hank,of Charlotte,N.C.,Kathryn M.Aston and husband,Jack Ripani,of Williamsburg,and Michele Conlon and husband,Mark,of Cary,N.C.;son,Jay Aston and wife,Nellie,of Centerville; grandchildren,Becky Conway and Grant Conway of Charlotte,N.C.,Michael Ripani, Neil Ripani and wife,Hannah,of Williamsburg and currently residing in Buena Vista,Shaun Ripani of Williams- burg and currently residing in Charlotte, N.C. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m.Saturday,Feb.17,at Nelsen Funeral Home and Crematory.A graveside service will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday,March 8,in Arlington National Cemetery.
Mel asked his family to recognize and thank his doctors,Dr.Philip Walter and Dr.Thomas Munzel,for their care and dedication during his lengthy illness. In lieu of flowers,due to services being held at Arlington National Cemetery,the family requests memorial donations be made to the James City County Volunteer Rescue Squad,P.O.Box 321, Toano,VA 23168,or to St.Bede Catholic Church,3686 Ironbound Road,Williamsburg,VA 23188.
